IMPORTANT OPTION FOR FINANCIAL RELIEF

I am sure that you all know many people affected by the flood disaster. From a tax perspective, the IRS will allow federal disaster victims to include a disaster loss deduction on their current year tax return or even amend the prior year tax return even though the loss occurred this year.

CLICK HERE for important document outlining the details. Due to the significance of many of the losses, probably most of an individual’s taxes paid could be recouped. Just wanted to pass this along in the hopes that it will be useful to the people you know that are affected. This may help their cash flow some in the coming year and at least offer some hope financially.

Obviously there many more immediate concerns but this one could be overlooked if someone is not aware.

STATE LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Finding and Selecting Licensed Contractors

The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors warns recent victims of flooding to use caution when hiring a contractor to repair or rebuild their homes.  Unscrupulous, unlicensed contractors often prey on victims of natural disasters.  The Board has found in the past where some contractors take advantage of homeowners who are anxious to rebuild.  Take your time and protect yourself against con artists who will take your money and run, or from incompetent contractors who will perform shoddy work.  Hire only licensed contractors and check them out with the Board.

The following is a list of tips to hiring a contractor; explanation of when a licensed is required by law; how to verify whether a contractor is properly licensed and if they have a history of complaints.

TIPS TO HIRING A CONTRACTOR
The Board urges consumers to follow these tips when dealing with contractors:

  • Hire only licensed contractors - Ask for the Tennessee license ID number or to see their pocket card; and verify their license status at the "License Search: at: http://tn.gov/commerce/boards/contractors/ or by contacting the Board's office at 800-544-7693 where you may also check their complaint history.  (While at the above website you should also review the Brochure to see a sample of what a license pocket card looks like.)

  • Check out the contractor - Don't hire the first contractor who comes along.  It's best to get at least three (2) bids, and check references (don't rush into repairs, no matter how badly they're needed).  Be skeptical of solicitations from those with out-of-state license plates or if you are rushed by the contractor to agree to let them perform the work.

  • Get a written contract - Make sure the contractor's name, address and telephone number on the contract is legitimate (not a P.O. Box address or phone answering services).  Contract should include an anticipated start and completion date.

TRYING TO SAVE MONEY? AVOID THE FIVE BIGGEST INSURANCE MISTAKES.

With nearly one in 10 Americans out of work, and others forced to make ends meet with less money, many people are looking for ways to cut costs. There are smart ways to save on home and auto insurance; however, there are also mistakes that can result in being significantly underinsured.

When money is tight, it extremely important to be financially protected against a catastrophe with the right amount and type of insurance by taking a few simple steps, it is possible to cut costs and still be protected should disaster strike.

Following are five of the biggest insurance mistakes that consumers should look out for:

  1. Insuring a home for its real estate value rather than for the cost of rebuilding. When real estate prices go down, some homeowners may think they can reduce the amount of insurance on their home. But insurance is designed to cover the cost of rebuilding, not the sales price of the home. You should make sure that you have enough coverage to completely rebuild your home and replace your belongings.

A better way to save: Raise your deductible. An increase from $500 to $1,000 could save up to 25 percent on your premium payments.

  2. Selecting an insurance company by price alone. It is important to choose a company with competitive prices, but also one that is financially sound and provides good customer service.

A better way to save: Check the financial health of a company with independent rating agencies and ask friends and family for recommendations. You should select an insurance company that will respond to your needs and handle claims fairly and efficiently.

  3. Dropping flood insurance. Damage from flooding is not covered under standard homeowners and renters insurance policies. Coverage is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), as well as from some private insurance companies. Many homeowners are unaware they are at risk for flooding, but in fact 25 percent of all flood losses occur in low risk areas.

A better way to save: Before purchasing a home, check with the NFIP to check whether it is in a flood zone; if so, consider a less risky area. If you are already living in a flood zone area, look at mitigation efforts that can reduce your risk of flood damage and consider purchasing flood insurance.

  4. Only purchasing the legally required amount of liability for your car. In today’s litigious society, buying only the minimum amount of liability means you are likely to pay more out-of-pocket—and those costs may be steep

A better way to save: Consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars worth less than $1,000. The insurance industry and consumer groups generally recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.

  5. If you don't own your home, neglecting to buy renters insurance. A renters policy covers your possessions and additional living expenses if you have to move out due to a disaster. Equally important, it provides liability protection in the event someone is injured in your home and decides to sue.

A better way to save: Look into multi-policy discounts. Buying several policies with the same insurer will generally provide surmountable savings.

If your car is getting up there in age, you may want to think about dropping the collision or comprehensive coverage (or both) on your policy. You need to think about this one though - it's not always a clear-cut decision. You need to weigh the cost of the two coverages with the value of your car and your chosen deductibles. For example, if you had a 10-year-old car that’s worth about $1000, and your deductible was $1000, the coverage is not actually going to help you.
Ask about discounts
Most insurance companies offer discounts. While the availability of discounts will vary depending on your insurer, where you live and whether you meet eligibility, make sure to ask if there are any discounts you can take advantage of. The following is a list of a few of the more common discounts (if available in your state, each insurer will have different eligibility requirements):
Multi-vehicle discount - available if you insure multiple vehicles with the same insurer
Multi-line discount - available if you insure your home and auto with the same insurer
Good driver discount - if you have not had an accident or ticket in a long time
Good student discount - if you’re a student with good grades, usually about a B average
Safe driver discount - if you’ve taken and passed an accredited driver safety course
Anti-theft discount - if your vehicle has certain anti-theft devices installed
Safe vehicle discount - if your vehicle has certain extra safety features
Retiree discount - if you’ve reached a certain age, usually 50 or 55
Low mileage discount - if your vehicle is not driven often
Occupational discount - if you work in a certain field or hold a certain degree
Auto club discount - if you are a member of an auto club, like AAA
Association discount - if you belong to certain associations, like your alma mater
Away-at-school discount – if your child is attending school out of town
Choose a car that costs less to insure
If you’re purchasing a new car and have narrowed it down to two or three options, compare the auto insurance rates of each to see if there is a notable difference in the cost to insure. Remember, insurance rates are more for vehicles with high theft rates and repair costs. If there is a significant difference in cost to insure your first choice car, you may have to reconsider.
Drive safely
OK, this one is obvious but true. Driver’s with no accidents, tickets or insurance claims almost always pay less for their auto insurance coverage. Your driving record is an influential factor in determining your insurance rate. Tickets and at-fault accidents affect your insurance rates for years. With a less than perfect driving record, you can find yourself paying a lot of extra insurance premium over the years.
